Damaged chimney crown

The chimney crown is the mortar or concrete that is at the top of your chimney. This mortar is designed to keep water from leaking down the inside of your chimney. Since the chimney crown is usually constructed with brick mortar, the chimney crown tends to crack during freeze and thaw cycles during winter months. This water can leak down your chimney and deteriorate chimney liner mortar joints. The water can also damage the firebox if it leaks behind the firebox wall. To prevent water problems, a good way to solve this problem is to have the chimney crown repaired.

The best way to repair chimney crowns is to seal the top of your chimney with a chimney crown repair product. Many times, chimney masons will simply remove the old crown and replace it with a new crown. This is not a good solution because concrete and mortar does not expand and contract with hot and cold temperatures. A chimney crown repair usually has a 15 year warrantee and is a great way to keep water from penatrating your chimney crown.
