Damaged chimney crown

The chimney crown is the mortar or concrete that is at the top of your chimney. This mortar is designed to keep water from leaking down the inside of your chimney. Since the chimney crown is usually constructed with brick mortar, the chimney crown tends to crack during freeze and thaw cycles during winter months.
