Credentials

A Step in Time is one of the only chimney sweep companies in the United States with a licensed professional engineer. Ray Gessner is a licensed professional engineer in Virginia and Maryland and has a master’s degree in engineering. Ray is also FIRE certified. All our technicians are personally trained by Ray Gessner where he focuses on the important issues regarding the proper way to inspect, clean and repair your fireplace. A Step in Time also has a class A contractor’s license, workers compensation insurance, liability insurance and an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. Our chimney technicians are the highest trained and best paid in the industry. Our concept is to provide the best quality service with a friendly personality. Training

A Step A Step in Time provides highly specialized training to it's technicians by the owner Ray Gessner who is a licensed professional engineer. There is quite a bit of hands on training when you are involved in a specialized industry like chimney cleaning but you will find that most of the specific and detailed requirements are placed in Residential code books. The required codes involved in our industry is reinforced on a continuous basis to our technicians. Whether these code requirements are designed to measure the area of a chimney flue or the proper number of nails required to fasten a shingle to a roof, A Step in Time emphasizes the importance of current building code requirements to our technicians. A properly educated technician leads to a higher quality of service to our customers.

Quality Controls

A Step in Time is one of the first companies in the country to employ a double check quality control program that utilizes the latest in computer technology. This process is a standard procedure our technicians perform that offers our customers a wealth of detailed information. Basically, the technicians will document the chimney inspection and cleaning process with several digital photographs that we send to our corporate office for quality control review. However, as a double check, these photographs are sent to you, our customer, for your review. Most homeowners are not going to climb 40 feet in the air to inspect the work our technicians perform.
